#Microblog Mondays: Promises in the Mail

I love when all the holiday catalogs that clog up our mailbox are replaced by these:

There is nothing like being in the dreary gray and white freeziness of January and receiving the promise of spring and new plants in those glossy pages. I know it's only been winter for a couple of weeks, but poring over these plant catalogs and dreaming of new beds and arrangements will get me through all the cold dreary winter to come. Maybe I won't plant vegetable seeds, maybe I'll make my cut flower garden I talked about last year and never did. The possibilities are endless (well, budget permitting).

It's a waiting I know has an end to it, a period of anticipation that will end in green shoots and colorful blossoms and butterflies. Hope in the mailbox.

  3. What a sense of elation and promise and rebirth these catalogs give! A splash of color in the dreary days of winter, expectation that there will be an end to the dark times.

  4. Yay!!! Maybe that means we'll be getting ours soon! I hear you. It helps make the winter not feel so never-ending. I love looking through those!

  5. I'm pretty much ready for spring as soon as Christmas is over, but I try not to think about it because it's going to be soooooo long. Although I should make some plans for the yard maybe, it desperately needs something done with it. I hear you on knowing that the period of waiting will at least end.

  6. I get soooo annoyed when I see Christmas catalogs showing up months in advance (like, before Halloween!) because it feels like I'm being rushed through the fall. However, getting gardening catalogs at this time of year is awesome! Love "hope in the mailbox."

  7. Pretty! Winter isn't that bad when there is snow. Unlike today, which only holds rain. Wet, grey, and cold.

    1. Same here, but today it switched back over to snow and crazy wind. Freezy, snowy times ahead...

  8. I'm so over winter here in Ireland: it's been months, and the worst part is just starting really. December was oppressive and disgusting. At least it's a few minutes lighter now every day. I need to re-think Christmas next year and go somewhere warm I think. Half of the city still have bloody Christmas trees and Santas up: what's wrong with people.

    1. Ekk! I still have my Christmas tree up! We are sort of half-heartedly celebrating Three Kings Day so our tree will be coming down this weekend!

    2. January has been gray and rainy so far, although it suddenly got freezing and there's snow coming...but I don't mind some fresh snow. It's the dingy, dirty snow that's been sitting there that kills me. I got totally made fun of in a couple meetings for going somewhere colder for Christmas vacation... Going somewhere warm will be nice for you! I will take cozy and snow outdoorsy fun over facing the beach any day though... :) We don't have a tree up, but our decorations stay up through the 6th, out of tradition for Epiphany (even though we're not religious now). I could have taken it all down Monday though if I'd had the energy, something about a clean, fresh, decluttered house for the new year is lovely.

  9. Hope of things to come in the rebirth of Spring! I understand your description of waiting with an anticipated end and endless waiting anticipating their might be an end. It is such a hard thing! Hoping you have New Year full of hope, in and out of your mailbox! :)

  10. Ooooh, pretty! I love the pictures and the promise of winter being done someday (I always say I've clearly got a geographic mismatch between where I live with long winters and my personality where I dislike cold/snow/ice).

  11. I love it! After a failed vegetable garden experiment one year, we just filled up our little 4'x4' patch of ground with wildflower seeds the next season. It was unruly but very cheerful!

When you're going through IF stuff, I think it can be really helpful to have those things with an end goal you have more control over. I also find it really healing to nourish life in any form – whether it's plants, pets, or the hummingbirds at the feeder outside.

  12. I have a few packs of these hanging on my fridge. I want to plant them, but I don't have much luck planting anything and having it thrive.
